Now that the lockout is over, it’s full speed ahead for the preseason. Of course, NFL exhibition games are meaningless even during a normal year, but this season it’s hard to gauge what exactly will show up on the field.
Nevertheless fans who’ve suffered without football for six months are expected to come clamoring back, so here’s a look at what we’re in store for locally.
The Raiders play their preseason opener on Thursday, August 11 at 7 p.m. hosting the Cardinals. Since it can’t air live unless it sells out, and we all know how likely that is, look for it at 10 p.m. on KICU channel 36.
The following day, the 49ers open up at the Saints at 5 p.m. on KPIX channel 5.
On Saturday, August 20, it’s the “Battle of the Bay” at the ‘Stick at 5 p.m. It’s also the “Battle of Local Stations” as both KTVU channel 2 and KPIX will have it.
The following week, same time, same place, the 49ers host the Texans, also on channel 5.
On Sunday the 28th, the Raiders host the Saints on NBC’s Sunday Night Football at 5 p.m. But it must sell out for KNTV channel 11 to air it live. This is NBC’s only scheduled appearance in the Bay Area this year. We’ll see if they regret it.
Preseason concludes on Thursday, September 1, with the 49ers at the Chargers at 7 p.m. on channel 5. The next night, The Raiders have another nationally televised contest, at the Seahawks at 7:30 p.m. on NFL Network. Channel 2 will carry it locally.
Need more preseason action? ESPN has 4 matchups starting with the Seahawks at the Chargers on August 11 at 5 p.m. Something to watch if the Raiders are blacked out.
Fox has 3 including the Bucs at the Chiefs, on channel 2 opposite the 49ers-Saints on the 12th.
NFL Network gets into the act at the same time as the Bay Battle on the 20th, with the Saints at the Texans. Then a doubleheader on September 1 (Colts-Bengals, Broncos-Cards) before the aforementioned Raiders-Hawks contest the next night.
The week before they venture to Oakland, NBC has the Chargers at the Cowboys, 5 p.m. on channel 11.
CBS also has two contests but you’ll probably only see one of them: the Packers at the Colts on August 26th at 5 p.m. on channel 5. The following night, KPIX has the 49ers at the Texans, so the CBS telecast, Patriots at the Lions, will most likely be shoved to co-owned KBCW channel 44.
Radio-wise, the 49ers just re-upped with KNBR and 107.7 FM The Bone. 49ers are on 1050 AM till the Giants are done for the season.
The Raiders are once again on KFRC 1550 AM and Live 105 FM. Good to know during those TV blackouts.
