The main draw for the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open was released early Friday evening. Local favorite Coco Vandeweghe and Mercury Insurance Open Opportunity title winner Nazari Urbina served as the player representatives at the Main Draw Ceremony.
Alexa Glatch of Newport and Sloane Stephens of Fort Lauderdale, two American up-and-comers, have received wildcards into the tournament and also add to the bottom half of the draw.
Glatch (21) graduated from Laurel Springs High School. She was accepted to UCLA but opted not to attend. Coached by Kevin O’Neill and Robert Vanthof she is represented by Octagon and endorses Nike sportswear and footwear and Babolat rackets. In 2011 she played ITF Circuit events, and reached qualifying in Memphis and Copenhagen.
The upper half of the draw features No. 1 seed Vera Zvonareva, 2008 Roland Garros champion Ana Ivanovic, as well as 2011 Wimbledon semifinalist Sabine Lisicki. Kimiko Date-Krumm, who won the title in Carlsbad in 1996, will play Argentinean wildcard Gisela Dulko in what should be a very competitive match. In addition, Rancho Santa Fe native Vandeweghe faces Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the first round. Interestingly, the top half includes six of the eight qualifiers.
Last year’s finalist Agnieszka Radwanska and semifinalist Daniela Hantuchova headline the bottom half, and could meet for a rematch in the quarterfinals. The main draw also sets up a potential all-German quarterfinal clash between second seed Andrea Petkovic and seventh seed Julia Goerges.
The top eight seeds received first-round byes, and could end up facing each other later in the tournament.
Main draw play, which begins on Monday, August 1, will showcase much of the newer generation in women’s professional tennis. Tournament director Raquel Giscafré commented, “I think it is very competitive, and it is going to be great quality matches. This is top notch tennis.”
