If you are heading to New York City make sure you stop by Serendipity3 for its world famous trademark Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. Serendipity3 was New York’s first Coffee House Boutique. It all began in 1954. It is a wonderland, whimsical, quaint restaurant on the Upper Manhattan Eastside.
It has been a hot spot for many celebrities with the likes of Zac Efron, Selena Gomez, Bill Clinton, Sarah Palin the list goes on. First Lady Jackie O was a frequent customer. It was a favorite of Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe’s. Serendipity3 has appeard prominently in at least two major movies. The movie most associated with the restaurant is its namesake Serendipity which was released in 2001. It centers on a couple that meet by chance while shopping at Bloomingdale’s. They share a dessert at the restaurant later that same night. One Fine Day is the second movie which was released in 1996. It also has a scene in the restaurant, featuring the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. Another movie sharing in the Serendipity bliss was Trust the Man which was released in 2006. In one scene, David Duchovny’s character is being invited to Serendipity3 by a potential love interest. Then there is a second scene at the restaurant on the first floor eating.
In 2004, celebrating its fiftieth anniversay, Serendipity3 introduced a record-breaking sundae that is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive dessert selling for $1000. But if you want one of these, call ahead of time. You need 48 hours advance notice.
Their menus are huge with a large variety of items from hot dogs to pasta to wings to steak. The dessert list is incredible with everything you can imagine. Along with the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, there is a fabulous Peanut Butter Pie and out of this world cheesecake. Servings are big so go prepared to satisfy your sweet tooth. You may have a wait to get in but take that time to shop in the boutique up front. There are some beautiful jewelry pieces, cookbooks (with the actual Frrrozen Hot Chocolate recipe), shirts, purses and of course you must go home with a famous Serendipity3 T-Shirt.
Serendipity3 is located at 225 East 60th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, New York, NY 10022. Their hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11:30am to midnight; Friday, 11:30am to 1:00am; Saturday, 11:30am to 2:00am.
