Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” is still filming in Illinois, according to On Location Vacations, and fans have gotten some candid stills of the action. We’re reprinting a few of the more interesting ones, courtesy of the unofficial Facebook page. The stills give additional detail of Superman’s costume, which has been tinkered with. Gone are the familiar red trunks and yellow belt, and the costume is textured and rubbery. The cape is not in evidence in some stills, but those pictures appear to be of star Henry Cavill blocking out a shot, and the cape, which is gigantic, is seen in other shots.
Clearly, for better or worse, Superman is going into action against Zod and Faora in his hometown of Smallville. Some fans are going to groan over that one. It isn’t like we just wrapped a decade-long run of “Smallville,” or anything. And, as Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond have been cast as Superman’s biological parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, in addition to Kevin Costner and Diane Lane playing Jonathan and Martha Kent, we are back in origin territory.
It may well be that Warner Bros. is trying to preserve the copyright to certain aspects of the Superman story. As we’ve reported here extensively, there has been epic litigation over who owns what where Superman is concerned, and going back to square one may just be to make sure that Krypton and Smallville don’t revert to the estates of the comic book’s creators. It may also be that this screenplay presents Superman as the son of two fathers, with a resulting conflict of values, a theme that raised its head on “Smallville.”
In any event, General Zod is the only Superman villain who has any track record in the movies other than Lex Luthor, and Luthor’s been done to death. (It seems to be easier to come up with villains originated in the comic books for Batman.)
All these questions will finally be answered when “Man of Steel” opens in theaters June 14, 2013.
