Sex in Mommyville will be coming to off-Broadway in the near future and has already received rave reviews in the media. On Tuesday, June 19th they will be holding a special performance for women’s entrepreneurial group 85 Broads at the Snapple Theater. Described as, “is a feminist comedy about a neurotic, guilt-ridden, career-longing, sex-starved Manhattan mom trying to please her high-maintenance children, her husband, and her Russian parents who live upstairs. Against the backdrop of quarrelsome Muses, failed sex attempts, encounters with moms baring their lives on talk shows, and a flock of MILFs, Fishbeyn crafts a fearless portrayal of modern motherhood and a devastating commentary on the state of feminism today.
The topic of motherhood and sex is flooding our culture, from new TV shows such as Up All Night to the Sex in the City franchise to uncensored talk shows and mommy-is-all-sexed-up fashion trends, all pointing to a changing landscape of the American Mother.
Anna Fishbeyn’s new play, Sex in Mommyville, explores women’s sexuality after children with raucous humor and unflinching honesty, brilliantly weaving Greek mythology into one woman’s struggle to find her voice within an invasive culture and a traditional familial structure.”
Since its premiere at the Flea Theater, Sex in Mommyville has continued to receive rave reviews, from Bloomberg News highly recommending the show to Jewish Week calling the show, “a lusty unbridled…updating of Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House,'” to WCBS Radio describing the show as “comic genius.”
About the Playwright: 85 Broads member Anna Fishbeyn holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago, an MFA in Fiction from New School University, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University. Anna’s work examines the media-engendered pressures and socially acceptable double-standards affecting women and mothers today.
