According to an update on the company’s blog Wednesday morning, rental and streaming giant Netflix’s mobile app is now supported on a greater variety of Android phones due to an update to the Netflix application in Android Market.
Following the previous announcements on the the Netflix blog earlier this month, this most recent update for Netflix subscribers is worlds away from the disappointing announcement made nearly two weeks ago that the ever-popular DVD + Streaming package monthly pricing would no longer be available come September 1. This huge step away from the low cost subscription – the primary reason Netflix has been doing so well – is a result of added cost due to huge deals with production studios to add more blockbuster and newer titles to the streaming library . To profit from these deals, Netflix simply raised their prices and even went so far as to separate pricing for DVDs and Streaming.
Nontheless, many say that Netflix has made a bad movie with the price change. Thousands of customers nationwide, enraged at the announcement, responded with aggressive and angry comments. “We’ve been betrayed,” said one long-time Netflix customer, who is now an ex-subscriber. Since July 11, the announcement regarding the pricing changes on Netflix’s Facebook Page has garnered over 79,245 comments and national attention from blogs and news sites worldwide.
Many other customers voiced their support of Netflix through this phase. “The smart move, if staying with Netflix, is to stream,” said Jonathan Miller, a Netflix subscriber and owner of JFM Photography. “They’re attempting to get more movies for streaming – not just the Jaws 5 variety, but legit hits from the last few years,” referring to the expansions Netflix has made over the last several months that necessitated the split plans and price hikes.
Only time will tell whether the pricing changes and any subsequent changes – like new movies available for streaming sooner – will make or break Netflix, the little company that started out with a great big heart. “Just wait a bit,” Miller stated good-naturedly.
The list of additional Android devices the Netflix app is now compatible with can be accessed along with the app itself in Android Market. So for all you Orange County Netflix subscribers who also own Android devices, check it out!
