Lerks become bigger adversary as the latest NS2 build optimizes Kharaa’s aeriel threat.
The most recent beta build for Natural Selection 2 sees another large tweak in gameplay mechanics, in particular with the winged, spiked spewing assassin, Lerk. With significant tuning in the areas of flight and combat, alien players have more options in maneuverability and engagements.
Among the most noticeable change is the Spore ability. Originally this poisonous gas would launch as a gas ball, dispersing it’s deadly fumes on targeted surfaces or enemies upon impact. Now Spore will stream out like a fire extinguisher, creating different combat strategies for alien players. For example, the new and improved Spore can create smoke screens for concealment and ambush tactics or you can leave a trail during evasive action. Either way it still packs a solid punch.
The next area of refinement comes in flight mode. Before, many players would perch themselves in an elevated position, wait for marines to pass by and snipe them out with spike attack. Now Lerks can shoot downward in flight, granting more combat movement and creating a headache for marine players. In addition to this, Lerks can also “air break” by holding the shift key, allowing for increased agility. You read right, and that’s not all.
Last, but certainly not least is the Spike projectile, which now functions on the hit-scan method. This means the laws of physics have gone bye-bye. If your target fits in the cross-hairs then it will most likely get nailed. The secondary fire, which was a zoom-in mode for sniping, has been removed in favor of a cluster shot with 5 spikes. Nice. Furthermore, in a recent tweet by Unknownworlds, “Lerk spikes now have infinite range, to make them more intuitive. Made slightly less accurate to compensate.” Considering the CQC, this makes sense.
To sum it up, Lerks are more agile, deal more damage, and have increased offensive and defensive attributes. My advice: Run away! Build 185 has more goodies for alien players and Frontiersmen, but until the next build, Lerks may have a field day. The jet-packs are coming, be patient.
If you’re sadly wandering outside the NS2 circle then pre-order the game here and jump in the intense beta action. Be sure to check out NS2HD’s break down of 185 and see the Lerk in action.
