Greetings fresh food lovers. Since this is National Salad Week (July 25-31), let’s take a look at some area restaurants, with outstanding salad bars, or that have memorable salads.
After interviewing 100 people at random, at the Charleston Town Center, and then researching further on my own, I have made a small list of your favorites here in the Capital City.
Shoney’s, a perennial favorite in Charleston, always has a great salad bar. It is well stocked, properly rotated, and a very good value for the money.
The French Quarter Restaurantat the Greyhound race track, although fairly new, has a great reputation for serving food that is fresh and high in quality. Every Monday they offer an All-you-can-eat Pasta and Salad Bar.
At the Fifth Quarter, you can still get an excellent assortment of fresh vegetables to adorn your salad. They even have Caesar Salads on their bar.
Ahh, the Golden Corral. This is one of my favorites because of the layout of their buffet. It’s one long line. At the salad bar end, you can get the biggest variety of fresh ingredients for your salad in the Kanawha Valley. If that isn’t enough, you can watch the salad makers prepare fresh salads and sides, while you dine.
If you’ve never tried Bellacino’s, try it. They have a great Greek Salad.
Applebee’s and the Tidewater Grill, both have incredible Greek Salads. The dressings at Tidewater are especially good!
Chili’s touts on their menu, that their salads are “created from produce selected at the peak of freshness, and hand-tossed right in their kitchen.”
Caribbean Salad– Fresh pineapple, mandarin oranges, dried cherries, green onions, cilantro, sesame seeds, and honey – lime dressing. With your choice of grilled chicken or grilled shrimp.
Quesadilla Explosion Salad– Grilled chicken, with cheese, tomatoes, corn relish, cilantro, tortilla strips, and citrus – balsamic dressing. Served with cheese quesadillas.
Bluegrass Kitchen is another great place with memorable salads. (Among other things.) Their House Salad, is organic spring greens, tomato, feta cheese, alfalfa sprouts, peppers, and red onion. I think their Caesar Salad might be the best in town.
Made with organic romaine hearts, homemade Caesar, and a fresh parmesean crouton. All dressings are made in house: strawberry vinaigrette, buttermilk peppercorn, bleu cheese, ranch, Italian and Caesar.
