Next week Dedham will join cities and towns across the Nation as part of the National Night Out on August 2nd. National Night Out is an effort by the local police department and citizens to join together to make the neighborhoods safer and to raise awareness about public safety. This year the Dedham Police Department will join various civic groups from Dedham and host several activities from July 31 through August 2nd. These activities will be held at various locations around town including Condon Park, Endicott Estate, Dedham Manor, Oakdale Square and Dedham Square.
The first of the activities will be held on Sunday July 31st at Condon Park. It will be a baseball game featuring Dedham’s Police Department vs. Members from local Civic Groups including Dedham Square Circle, Manor Neighborhood Watch, Oakdale Alliance and Mother Brook Community Group. The game will kick off at 9am and there will be Coffee and Treats available for spectators.
On Monday, August 1st, the Dedham Police Station will be hosting an open house from 8:00am– 4:00pm. Visitors will be able to get tours of the police station including the cells, booking and dispatch center. There will also be a special guest, ‘McGruff the Crime Dog’. Kids will also be able to see the police motorcycles, mobile command post, dunk tank, police dogs and other emergency vehicles. Please bring a non-perishable food donation to support the Dedham Food Pantry. There will also be a trained officer available to conduct child car-seat-safety inspections to make sure your car seat is properly installed!
On Tuesday August 2 at Endicott Estate there will be a Jail and Bail fundraising event where each participating civic group will identify certain individuals who must raise enough money to get bailed from jail. There will be mug shots taken and posted to Facebook and they will have to get a pardon from judges. Money raised will go directly to the participating civic groups. This event will last from 8:00am – 4:00pm.
On the night of Tuesday August 2nd is when the rest of the events will take place. These events will be taking place throughout the town in the different sections of Dedham including Dedham Center, Oakdale, Manor and East Dedham.
There will be a Panel Discussion regarding Prescription Drug Awareness held at the Dedham Historical Society from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. Local experts Leanne Jasset (Wardle’s Pharmacy), Ron Pucci (School Resource Officer) and Detectives Walsh and Mahoney from Dedham Police Department will lead the discussion on what residents can do to keep kids and town safe from prescription drug abuse.
6:30pm – 8:00pm, Oakdale Square will feature a Children’s Costume Parade led by ‘McGruff the Crime Dog’. Kids should dress up as a favorite superhero or crime fighter. Each child will receive a glow stick to light the night. Parents, you can join in the fun too by getting dressed up. Prices will be awarded for the best costumes. There will also be light refreshments served.
7:00pm – 9:00pm, East Dedham will feature a movie night starring Scooby Doo. Grab your flashlight, chairs, blanket, family and friends and head over to Condon Park to watch the movie. Popcorn and drinks will be available. (Don’t forget your bug spray though!)
And finally, in the Dedham Manor Neighborhood, there will be a Flashlight Neighborhood Walk from 8pm-8:30pm. Everyone should meet at Terri’s Market and take a stroll with family and friends around the neighborhood. Light refreshments will also be available.
