The immediate debt crisis has been averted, so why are we protesting? Because Republicans like Senator Corker have forced us into a contrived disaster so they can have their own way – destroy the Middle Class way of life (not to mention the poor!) without requiring any new taxes from billionaires and corporations. This tactic has been famously exposed in Naomi Klein’s THE SHOCK DOCTRINE; who would have thought anyone could use it on Americans? Yet the Republicans are boasting about how far they have pushed the dialogue. We went to Senator Corker’s office to push back. (It should be noted that, since we had informed the Senator’s office we would be there at noon, the staff was told to take half-day off, leaving at 1:00 PM.)
So we get our Social Security checks and our Medicare (thank God!) for now, but at a cost of a special congressional commission charged to find new ways to cut our debt. The activists at Firedoglake.com call it the “Catfood Commission on Steroids”. Many of us feel it will inevitably be devoted to finding out how many seniors can live on catfood and no medication. Since many Republicans are refusing even to consider new taxes, prospects do not look good for us. That’s why we were at the West End wall today, demonstrating while some met with Senator Corker’s staff.
Why are we keeping the pressure on lawmakers? I am 65 years old and retired last year after working and paying payroll taxes for Social Security for 40 years. Now they want to take it away? I had a major stroke in 1994 and ovarian cancer in 2002; no health insurance company would touch me. They want to take away Medicare? My 43-year-old son has chronic asthma and excema. They want him to work until he drops to keep some kind of medical coverage? Many folks are worse off than us. I’m including a photo of a lady in an electronic wheelchair who uses Accessaride to get to as many demonstrations as possible.
We want to make the corporate Tea Party policies as popular as toenail fungus.
