NASA Langley has its helicopter back, now that the Bell UH-1 Huey is no longer supporting Space Shuttle missions at the Kennedy Space Center. The helicopter was built in 1968, and served as a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit in Viet Nam, and then was acquired by NASA Langley in 1991. Assigned call sign N535NA, it was also used for Space Shuttle mission support at the Kennedy Space Center. NASA says it’s first post-Shuttle job will be supporting NASA’s Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology research. That’s a program working on technologies to allow future space vehicles to automatically locate and fly to safe landing sites, after potential hazards have been detected by space vehicles returning to Earth.
