Will Fox News survive the storm currently rocking Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. media empire?
Monday the American arm of Murdoch’s empire came under attack. In particular, the questionable practices of Fox News have once again come under intense scrutiny.
Murdoch’s News Corp. is in flames after a cesspool of sleazy journalism and base criminality emanating from News Corp.’s British News of the World tabloid was recently exposed.
As the scandal continues to rage in Great Britain with revelations of ghastly illegal and unethical news gathering practices by News Corp. employees; the scandal festers and grows, crossing the Atlantic, and threatening the American portion of Murdoch’s media empire.
Monday several media watchdog groups asked congress to investigate ethical and legal aspects of the news gathering activities of Murdoch’s News Corp. Both Media Matters and CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) are seeking congressional action.
Also on Monday a group of News Corp. investors filed a lawsuit accusing News Corp. of “improper conduct,” “nepotism,” and a failure to take action after evidence of improper, unethical and illegal news gathering practices were originally exposed over six years ago.
Murdoch’s News Corp media conglomerate includes U.S. based news organizations such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and Fox News. Yet it seems apparent that the biggest concern is Fox News, and what many find to be questionable, if not dishonest, methods and tactics.
Murdoch employees stand accused of hacking into the voice mail accounts of not only celebrities and members of the royal family but also of victims of crime and terrorism, including victims of the 9/11 tragedy.
In addition, critics have long held that Fox News is not news at all, but actually a propaganda arm for the Republican party. Critics point towards the overt hostility to President Obama and the Obama administration, as well as orchestrated campaigns to smear such progressive figures and causes as Van Jones and Acorn as proof positive that Fox News is complicit in a campaign of Republican dirty tricks.
Critics complain Fox News promotes their conservative agenda by taking advantage of the weak minded and the frightened. Critics want congress to hold Fox News accountable for their deception. Calling right wing talking points “Fair and Balanced” is simply dishonest. Many believe that if nothing else Fox News is guilty of false advertising.
