An advanced screening of the highly anticipated superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger took place at the Edwards Marq*E IMAX 23 movie theater this past Wednesday, July 20th.
Traffic wasn’t so great. I guess traffic is still a bit heavy from people getting off at 5pm around the time I usually leave for screenings. I-10 was steady, but full of cars. I kept getting stuck behind people who drove under the speed limit. As I was exiting, there was suddenly a line of cars and a bunch of brake lights. Some girl had lost control of her car and drove headfirst into the cement wall on the right side of the off ramp. It must’ve just happened too as everyone was just driving by and no cops or tow trucks were around yet.
The screening was set to start at 7pm and was presented in 3D. I purposely left an hour early to try and get a decent seat. The line at the entrance was already crazy and the line at the theater was still filling in when I got over there. With so many people, I considered myself lucky to have an empty seat next to me by the time showtime rolled around.
Hot 95.7, Mix 96.5, and 100.3 KILT were all there presenting the film. They had a loud, clear microphone for once. They did the usual trivia for radio station grab bags and then gave out Captain America shields to two lucky people in the audience who were wearing Captain America shirts.
As a quick side note, there was this guy sitting next to me with the weirdest tattoos. He had three ants that were each about the size of a fifty cent piece in random places on his arm along with Tigger from Winnie the Pooh doing what looked like a salute. This is one of the reasons I don’t have tattoos. I don’t want it to…look like that.
One thing I wasn’t happy about was the fact we didn’t get any trailers with the film at all. This wouldn’t have been such an issue if a trailer for the new Spider-Man movie wasn’t reported to have been attached to prints of the film. Also, the teaser trailer for The Avengers which was supposed to be the post-credit scene wasn’t there either. I hear it was removed due to it leaking online early. It was just really disappointing, especially after sitting through some really long credits.
Captain America: The First Avenger is now playing in most 2D and 3D theaters across the Houston area. Showtimes at the Edwards Marq*E usually begin around 11:00am while the last showing is around 10:30pm. Parking is free, but you may have a bit of a walk on a busy night or if there’s somebody really popular at the Houston Improv next door. You can reach the Edwards Marq*E 23 IMAX Theater at (713) 263-7843. It’s located at 7620 Katy Freeway here in Houston right next to the Improv off of I-10.
