Thanks to an unbreakable German cipher and the Enigma device making it possible, the Germans are winning the war at sea in 1942. When a German sub is crippled the Americans see their chance. Disguising a American sub commanded by Dahlgren and Tyler as a German U-boat, they plan to board the German sub and steal the Enigma.
Matthew McConaughey (Lt. Tyler), Bill Paxton (Lt Cmdr Dahlgren), Harvey Keitel (Chief Klough), Jon Bon Jovi (Lt Emmett), David Keith (Maj. Coonan), Jake Weber (Lt. Hirsch).
This was an interesting plot with some lovely complications like a second German sub showing up when the American sub did, strife within the crew, and the death of key characters. Add in the somewhat realistic portrayal of submarines and plenty of action and this one moves along pretty well. What was lacking though was the feel of fear you get when facing the idea of losing a submarine while being an occupant.
Special effects were decent enough in this one to make it seem fairly realistic. Many scenes felt very much like a real submarine. Action scenes were fairly well done and realistic.
Acting by pretty much everyone was decent, although Keith was flat as a pancake. I was amazed at Bon Jovi’s performance and neither of us watching the film even knew it was him until the credits rolled. We really thought he delivered nicely in this movie.
This is first and foremost a war flick so if you don’t enjoy those, pass on this one.
Some violence in this one so save it for teens and above. Younger viewers may not find it very interesting anyway as there is a fair amount of drama and war strategy involved.
U-571 is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
