A father’s (Steve Carell) life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis when his wife (Julianne Moore) has an affair, befriends a stranger (Ryan Gosling) who sets out to bring out ‘the new man’ in him as he tries to manage his relationship with his children.
Admittedly, this reviewer is enjoying the recent ‘adult themed’ comedies on relationships without the ‘sterile, politically correct’ cliché’s’. The recent ‘R’ rated comedies of ‘Bad Teacher’ (2011), ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011), ‘Hangover’ films (2009 & 2011), ‘Horrible Bosses’ (2011), and ‘Friends With Benefits’ (2011) which present ‘adult sized’ perspectives on the aspects of relationships, are a treat with their fancifulness.
Although rated PG-13, this cast of seasoned veteran actors of Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon deliver finely chiseled likeable characters as they face the challenges of being single, marriage, and family, while Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are delightfully charming as the younger generation with their own brand of living life outside the norm!
