A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873. For what purpose, that’s the unknown factor. To the surprise of the ‘other world visitors’, the inhabitants of the region, which includes an outlaw (Daniel Craig) and his gang, the local tyrannical land/cattle baron (Harrison Ford), a woman (Olivia Wilde) of mystery, the town sheriff (Keith Carradine), the town doctor (Sam Rockwell) and the Native Americans of the region lead by Nat Colorado (Adam Beach), form an unlikely partnership to stave off the invading force in an old-time Wild West standoff.
Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man” films 2008, 2010) combines the Western and Alien/Sci-Fi genres creating an action-packed movie with the underlying theme that although the inhabitants of Earth may have our inter-species differences, we will come together when presented with a common threat.
I’m reminded of one of my favorite’s which often combined the two genres, ‘The Wild Wild West’ television series (1965-1969) starring Robert Conrad and the late Ross Martin, which often features stories with the mixture of the western/Sci-Fi genres.
With the production team of Ron Howard & Brian Grazer, and Steven Spielberg as one of the executive producers, and director Jon Favreau, the combined expertise of these talented filmmakers ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ presents an entertaining 2-hour adventure that moves briskly along providing ‘escape entertainment’ as we face some very tough times in our work-a-day lives…
