Today, Philadelphia Inquirer journalist Martha Woodall reports that checks former employees finally received for their roll over pay are bouncing. It’s not enough that the checks have been several days late or that people had to go to the payroll department of the Philadelphia School District and wait for hours to get their check, now they’re also expected to go to their bank to get a copy of the bounced check and take it back to the payroll department so they can issue another check which will take another several days.
The school district probably calls it spin control. The payroll employees call it being overworked. It really all comes down to one lie after another as Dr. Ackerman waste 18 million dollars on a SLAM program that didn’t work and is anticipating ripping off the city for 1.5 million dollars once she leaves.
Even for the people who have bank accounts with Wells Fargo, also the school district’s bank, depositing the check wasn’t so easy because the computer didn’t read the first digit. The checks had to be resubmitted several times before the computer read it correctly. In addition, the school district took out large sums of money for retirement for people who were no longer employees. After every government agency sticks their hands in it, these employees will walk away with half of what they actually made.
Unless you’re a teacher or one of Ackerman’s chosen few it is not lucrative working for the school district who actually believes in the whole penny for a pound thing. It is also not easy working for an agency that doesn’t respect or appreciate their employees.
This clearly demonstrates that point because instead of receiving the checks on time, through the postal system and without problems, former employees had to go downtown to the administration building and grovel for what is owed to them. Several people are being told to come back on this date only to be told to either come back after 3 p.m. or come back in a couple of days.
It further indicates the contempt that Dr. Ackerman has for these people that after years of service this is what it comes down to. The previous promise of fixing a “glitch” in the system was an empty promise and probably wasn’t a glitch in the first place. Queen Ackerman screamed from her throne, “Let them eat pretzels.”
