Ken Ludwig’s uproarious comedy “Moon Over Buffalo” will open at Haddon Township’s Ritz Theatre with a preview on September 8. This nonstop laugh riot, set in Buffalo, New York in 1953, concerns a run-down theatrical troupe preparing to present “Cyrano de Bergerac” and Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” in repertory. The troupe is led by George and Charlotte Hay, an embattled married couple who are constantly bickering. Charlotte dreams of being a movie star, but George prefers the stage. His attitude changes somewhat when he receives a call from famous Hollywood director Frank Capra, who says he is coming to their next performance to consider them for the leads in his next big movie. However, Charlotte not only does not believe this; she is furious at George, having learned of his affair with an actress in their troupe—who is now pregnant.
Charlotte runs off with an admirer, but returns when she hears that Capra really is coming. Meanwhile, George has started hitting the local bars. The ensuing action involves the couple’s daughter, her fiancé, and Charlotte’s hard-of-hearing mother
in a madcap mix-up of mistaken identity, romantic complications, and a frantic search for George. He finally shows in a highly inebriated state, which leads to multiple comic disasters, both backstage and in the play—or plays—within the play.
Carol Burnett starred as Charlotte in the original hit Broadway production, which should give you an idea of the magnitude of its hilarity, an irresistible blend of situation comedy, slapstick and innuendo.
