Actress Swoozie Kurtz, who plays Joyce Flynn on CBS’ hit Monday night sitcom Mike & Molly will stop by the network’s daytime chatfest Thursday, July 28, where she’ll not only discuss her own lengthy career, but also the rising star of her on-screen daughter Molly Flynn, actress Melissa McCarthy.
Kurtz began her television career with a role on CBS‘ now-defunct soap opera, As The World Turns back in 1971. For the next decade, she appeared in a handful of TV movies and occasional film roles, including a brief appearance in 1982’s The World According to Garp. In the early 80s, she landed her first starring role in the all-but-forgotten, yet groundbreaking sitcom,Love Sidney, co-starring alongside Tony Randall,Kurtz played a young single mother raising her daughter with her New York roomie, a middle-aged gay man.
Another dozen or so TV movies and occasional big screen roles lead Kurtz to perhaps her best known role as Alexandra ‘Alex’ Reed Halsey Barker on NBC‘s Saturday night family drama, Sisters (1991-1996).
The success of Sisters made it official, Kurtz was a star. From there she quickly landed another series, 1996’s small-screen take on the film Party Girl. Still more TV and film roles followed throughout the remainder of the 90s and into the 2000s, including big screen turns inLiar Liar, Cruel Intentions and Bubble Boy and TV series such as More Tales of the City and Love & Money.
In recent years, Kurtz was a cast member in HBO‘s Huff, as well as NBC‘s imaginative and visually stunning Pushing Daisies. She’s also enjoyed single episode stints on everything from Lost, Desperate Housewives, Law & Order: SVU and Chuck to voice work on FOX‘s American Dad!.
When she visits the ladies of The Talk on Thursday, Kurtz will no doubt congratulate Mike & Molly star Melissa McCarthy for her recent Emmy nomination. Of course McCarthy and the cast of Mike & Molly owe a debt of gratitude to Melissa‘s own big screen breakthrough as Megan, the balls-to-the-walls sister of the groom in this spring’s mega-hit, Bridesmaids.
Spurred by the success of Melissa‘s hit movie, and Charlie Sheen‘s recent antics, CBS shuffled their Monday night schedule, temporarily sandwiching Sheen‘s Two and a Half Men between two episodes of Mike & Molly.
Kurtz and the rest of the cast of Mike & Molly are set to begin filming Season 2 next month with a Season 2 premiere set for Monday, September 26. Kurtz‘ visit with the ladies of The Talk airs live, Thursday, July 28 at 12/1c on most CBS affiliates.
