On July 29th, Michigan State Spartans quarterback Kirk Cousins proved he can do something that not even some of the best players at his position in the nation can do: He can really give an intelligent and well-coordinated speech.
Cousins is still fielding the accolades pertaining to his Big Ten Conference luncheon speech that left attendees with a new found respect for the coveted quarterback. From subjects ranging to the debate over possible paychecks for college players, to the duties and responsibilities of being a college athlete, Cousins left media personnel and fans alike simply mesmerized.
Spartans safety Trenton Robinson, who was recently named a team captain along with Cousins, knew how to answer the same questions when queried by reporters,
“If they ask me about pay-to-play, I’m not even going to lie to you: I’m going to say, ‘Go talk to Kirk,'” Robinson said. “He’s phenomenal.”
It’s been no secret in past seasons that Cousins is one of the top talents at his position in the conference, but it’s rare when a player of that magnitude can back up that performance off the field with the eloquence that the young quarterback demonstrates.
“I’m analytical by nature,” Cousins said. “That’s the way I operate. I think it helps on the field, too, playing quarterback. You have to process a lot of information very quickly.
“Whether it’s pay-for-play discussions or playing in tough moments, players may say at times, let’s just defer to Kirk,” Cousins added. “That’s part of being a leader. You have to take that on and manage it responsibly and maturely. I’ll take on whatever my teammates want to put on me.”
What’s one of those roles taken on by Cousins? Running back Edwin Baker, who himself is emerging as a key player for MSU, attempted to clarify the concept with a simple statement.
“What you see is what you get with Kirk,” said Baker. “He’s always on a mission. When you’re a player, you want a quarterback like that. He’s always going to have a plan to move the team forward.”
Seems simple enough doesn’t it? Maybe not for you or me, but for Kirk Cousins, it’s just another day at work. Just ask Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio about #8,
“Business as usual, to be honest with you.”
