My grandkids absolutely love to fish (see slide show) and because we’re a boating family it sort of goes with the territory. They get many opportunities to learn how to bait a hook, cast a line, identify different fish and appreciate the joys of seafood nutrition.
But, if you happen to not be a fisherman what can you do to introduce the kids in your life to this enjoyable and rewarding pastime? Well, on Tuesday, July 12, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, you can take your child (ages 6 and over) to the Miami-Dade County 4-H free Youth Fishing Clinic. All you have to do is RSVP to Liz by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) with the child’s name, age, and designated adult chaperone. The event will take place at the Biscayne National Park, 9700 SW 328th Street, Homestead, FL 33033. Just bring your lunch since poles and bait will be provided.
Then you can put all that instruction to use by participating in the 4-H Fishing for Adventure event scheduled for Friday, July 15th from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM with the Reward Fleet at Miami Beach Marina, 300 Alton Road, Dock A. All children must be age 6 or over, be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration with payment of $25.00/person is required. To register call the Reward Fleet at 305-372-9470 and mention the Sea Grant fishing trip.
So, there you have it. Let your child learn how to fish, then take them on a fishing trip. You’ll have the time of your life and your kid will be all smiles.
