Gospel duo Mary Mary gave a mini-concert at the Women of Faith conference, Friday, August 26th at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Women of Faith is a non-denominational women’s’ conference that seeks to encourage women of all ages to grow in faith and spiritual maturity. Mary Mary brought their energy and anointing to the stage before the thousands of women who gathered for the event.
The sisters (Erica Campbell and Tina Campbell), sang many songs from their hit album Something Big. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Gospel chart and has remained in the Top 10 for the past twenty-two weeks and the album is currently #3. Songs included Something Big, “Never Wave My Flag”, “Sitting with Me” and their hit lead single “Walking”, among others. Mary Mary also sang the song that introduce them to the gospel community and propelled their music career, “Shackles.”
GME spoke with the sisters before their arrival in DC. The siblings titled their album Something Big because, “It’s about what God has been doing. It’s not an album; it’s a movement, to give big and love big. It’s a campaign where we are charging fans to go outside of self and not be so self-absorbed.”
Mary Mary have the ability to reach a large demographic in the gospel and secular arena. When asked if it was by design, they are quick to ascribe it to God’s design and say that they are just two regular church girls and that “God happened to give us a much bigger platform, but that’s vey typical of God.” This is probably why they have “never, not at all” considered singing anything other than gospel, although they were asked. Mary Mary believes that “God let us go platinum and win a Grammy talking about Jesus as bold as we want to and we’re going to do it again and He’ll bless us again.”
The duo is so much more than music. They also believe in reaching out and giving back. Their newest video “Survive” pays homage to the work of the American Red Cross, and in their liner notes, they give shout-outs to World Vision, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Women of Faith. Tina said, “We are supposed to go into the highways and byways and compel men to come to Christ. We’re not just supposed to sit in a room and talk about Jesus and shout his name across the room to each other”. She goes on to say that connecting with these organizations with worldwide reach that “it makes you more effective. A lot of the lost aren’t coming to church so you have to go out and reach them.”
This is Mary Mary’s second year with Women of Faith and they are very pleased to be part of the event. Both sisters agree that “it’s absolutely amazing.”
“It’s honest, it’s fun, and it’s friendly. It touches and really speaks to issues that we don’t hear about on a Sunday morning. It’s so much fun, it’s a fun weekend. It’s women that are all about God, all about living life to its fullest and being your best self and addressing all of your issues whether they be family, weight, insecurity and just all kinds of stuff, broken hearts, broken dreams. Because after you get saved you still have to live an abundant life and it takes work every single day and so they give you tools to really live a fantastic life. Perfect? No, but with the help of Christ all things are possible and we are totally enjoying being a part of the Women of Faith Tour.”
The sold-out-for-Christ sisters will continue the Women of Faith Tour until its conclusion. They are planning a Christmas tour and finish up their Sunday Best duties for the season. And Tina Campbell will have a new addition to her family in the next seven months when she gives birth to her third child.
