July 30, the notorious magicJack ripped the Boston Breakers apart 4-0 for a sold out crowd of 3,064 at Florida Atlantic University soccer stadium. With the result, the Breakers (4-7-4, 16 pts, -4 GD) fall to fifth place in the six-team WPS and magicJack (6-6-2, 19 pts, -3 GD) rise to fourth.
The result leaves the Breakers a long shot for the four-team playoffs with their next three games against Western New York Flash, magicJack and Sky Blue FC.
The game marked U.S. Women’s National Team striker Abby Wambach’s debut as head coach for the controversial team for which she plays. Owner Dan Borislow, who had taken over coaching his own team, was recently banned from the sidelines by the League in response to a formal complaint by players and so Wambach consented to manage.
Devastating scoreline
Christen Press scored the second, third and fourth goals bringing her season total in eight. Press is now tied with Tasha Kai as the second highest goalscorer WPS, behind Christine Sinclair with nine. Press was assisted, respectively, by Wambach, Marian Dalmy, and Nikki Washington.
Wambach scored the first goal, her fifth of the season, assisted by Megan Rapinoe in the 16th minute.
The Breakers only managed a shocking one shot, on goal, compared to magicJack’s 16 shots, 10 on goal. Although Boston was without Kelly Smith, still recovering from World Cup injury, magicJack left Australian forward Lisa De Vanna unused on the bench. The Breakers have been unable to compensate for the loss of forward Jordan Angeli to a torn ACL in their first game of the 2011 season.
Next up
The Breakers next visit Western New York Flash on August 3 at 7:30 p.m.
