It’s Tuesday, August 30,2011, which, for football video gamers, can only mean one thing: Madden NFL ’12 hit stores today. For gamers all across the nation, this obviously meant people waiting in lines outside of stores just for the purpose of being among the first in the world to own the new game. For Cleveland Browns fans, the wait may have been especially worthwhile just because of the cover photo.
In a surprising upset, Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis made the cover of the Madden NFL ’12 video game, beating out highly-favored Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. Even more surprising, the vote wasn’t even close, with Hillis taking 66% of the final vote.
Finally, Cleveland football fans have something to cheer about, too bad the video game is only virtual reality. For Hillis, this marks the culmination of a breakout season.
Initially acquired as a 6th round draft pick last year, no one expected much of Hillis at the time Cleveland picked him up in the 2010 draft. However, in a season that came as a surprise to many football fans, Hillis was a NFL breakout star last year, rushing for 11 touchdowns and nearly 1,200 years. Suddenly, the unknown became one of the most recognizable, and respected, players in the NFL.
It was undoubtedly this out of nowhere performance, perhaps combined with controversy surrounding Vick, that propelled Hillis to the cover of Madden ’12.
In the contest to become the 15th cover player for the Madden series football games, Hillis beat out Ray Rice, Matt Ryan, Jamaal Charles, and even Superbowl MVP Aaron Rodgers before going head-to-head with Vick in the final vote, scoring a decisive victory there, too.
So, for long-disappointed Browns fans, this virtual reality win is something to smile about. Hopefully, though, Hillis can continue on his hot streak and help the Browns to a successful season
