Director M. Night Shyamalan hosted a “Make Your Mark on the World” cocktail party at the trendy Griffin Hotel in NYC. The purpose of the event was to announce the strategic partnership between Givology and the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation. M. Night delivered opening and closing remarks at the event. In addition, the paintings from Givology’s “Make Your Mark on the World: Interactive Art Exhibition” were auctioned, along with original artworks from Givology sponsored students from around the world. During the “Make Your Mark on the World” interactive art campaign, respected graphic artist Joseph Kilrain created a 6’x11’ world map mural which was publicly displayed in Union Square in New York. Hundreds of supporters marked or fingerprinted the map to indicate where they would like to create impact. The individual canvases of this one-of-a-kind mural were sold and auctioned. All proceeds from this event benefited Givology field partners that work to create innovative and sustainable education projects in developing nations.
Shyamalan’s wife Dr. Bhavna Shyamalan was also on hand to speak about this important collaboration.
Q: Tell us about the event tonight.
Dr: Bhavna Shymalan: So this is the announcement of our partnership with Givology. Generally, we tend to be a grant making organization, but we’re very hands on. We go out and visit all of our programs. We visit. Even if it’s in Sudan or Tanzania. Wherever. But with Givology, we were so inspired with what they’ve done. They’ve really revolutionized giving. And they’ve found a new way to get youth involved and to empower youth. To have everyone involved in changing the world. And so we thought that it wasn’t enough to just give them a grant. We wanted to create a partnership. They’re doing something that we really believe in. Which is making everyone an agent of change. And when they can do that with youth. You know that’s going to lead to a better future, because all of the youth that are empowered through them by their ability to give and their ability to do something. They’re going to go out and as they get older they’re going to do even more. So they’re fascinating. They’re fantastic. They’re energetic. They’re passionate. We just wanted to join them. We wanted to give them the chance to be better, to expand their reach, to do more. They’re 100% volunteer based. So one of the things they don’t have is full-time staff, because everyone has to have a job to make money. They don’t have you know, because of that, office space, they keep the cost very low. So every dollar you donate goes to actual programs, so they don’t have any infrastructure. As an organization, we have an infrastructure, we have an office space, even if it’s small, we have a staff of two, you know, but we have something. With that, if we give them that, we feel they can expand and grow and continue to be 100% volunteer based. So hopefully this partnership will really lead to…amazing work.
Q: Why is it so important to give back to your hometown in Pennsylvania?
Dr. Bhavna Shyamalan: Yeah, we actually have two parts to our organization. So we have one part that is local that’s focused on Pennsylvania. That’s primarily right now focused on education and specific education reform. But we also have a second part of our organization which is international…hat’s actually my baby. We do a lot of traveling. We do grants in Africa, India. Now we’re looking at Central America. So you know we have both.
