Drama, drama, drama. That’s what the Monday, August 08, 2011 episode of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Flip Flop, was all about.
The root of all of this drama could almost entirely be traced back to Adrian. Adrian found herself looking at her life with a new perspective and when Adrian wants something, it’s rare that she doesn’t get it.
And here’s where it all began…
During a conversation with her OB-GYN, Dr. Ottavi, Adrian has this moment of clarity that sets a whole new game plan in motion.
Dr. Ottavi is concerned over Adrian’s plans to try and get pregnant again and she encourages Adrian to look at the bigger picture. It’s clear that Adrian wants to get pregnant in order to save a marriage that she never really wanted.
Adrian saw the big picture all right; she now sees that having another baby would not be wise, but take off the blinders and what, no, who does she see? Ricky.
In the endless ring of gossip that is Adrian-Grace-Amy, Adrian tells Grace the pregnancy plan is off and all is well with them. Later Adrian discovers that Grace told Amy about her plan and it managed to get back to Ben. This infuriates Adrian and it’s friendship over for Grace and Adrian. Grace in turn calls Amy to let her know that Adrian is going after Ricky. High school girls…What more is there to say?
Things take an ugly turn for Ben and Adrian as Adrian makes a move to rush Ben out of the condo now that she too wants out of the marriage. Ultimately he gives in and moves back in with his dad and Betty.
Now here it gets a little intriguing as we take a little side trip with Leo and Betty where once again Betty reveals that she’s not as airheaded as she appears.
We learn that she knows Leo’s not entirely happy in their marriage, she aspires to go to college, and it’s her dream not to have to depend on anyone. While I’ve been assuming all season and last that the days were numbered on this marriage, I have to wonder if this won’t have Leo viewing Betty with a little more respect. We’ll see.
Ricky’s mom – Margaret – is being driven crazy by his birth mother, Nora, and recruits Ricky and Amy for “parental” duty of Nora. Essentially she just wants a little alone time with her husband and it’s gratifying to get a peek at them at the end of the episode in the only stable relationship this show has to offer.
Quote of the night goes to Nora: This is in response to Amy telling her they’re ordering pizza – “Oh, great! Teen food. Love being babysat by teens. Including my own teen.”
So the little family and Nora decide to stay at the Juergen’s house since Amy and Ricky’s apartment would be too small. While they’re there Adrian pops over and as much as tells Amy that she’s going after Ricky. Then she does what Adrian does best: plants doubts in Amy’s head.
The drama doesn’t end there, though. No, Amy confronts Ricky and they get into an argument which ends with him going to spend the night in their apartment alone. On top of that, Amy snagged his phone and is caught listening to his messages.
While there are serious trust issues at play here, it’s hard to blame Amy for swimming in doubt. She’s 17, this is the first serious relationship Ricky has ever attempted, and Adrian is a force all her own. On the other hand, hasn’t Ricky earned some trust at this point? It’s hard to say where this couple will go from here, but I’m rooting for this young family.
