Local Longmont alternative rock musician Austin Aeschliman has been chosen to be a Musician Jurist on the Award Committee for the Inaugural 2011 Logan Awards, alongside notable fellow musician juror Weird Al Yankovic and permanent juror Dr. Demento.
We first met Austin in 2008 when he was just a 15 year old Longmont teen, putting out the most hilarious musical parodies and fun originals under the stage name of “Odd Austin” and was rapidly gaining notoriety in the comedy music world (listen to an extensive interview done with him in 2008 at the below Longmont Advocate podcast link). According to Austin, he’s no longer doing parody music and is now “in a band called Smashy Claw that does mostly quarky stuff, occasional comedy, occasional serious stuff, usually somewhere in between.”
Among those who noticed Austin’s music are two people famous in the musical comedy world whom he will now join on the Logan Awards jury committee. Austin’s music has been one of the most requested songs played on the Dr. Demento Show. In 2011, Austin also co-produced the popular “Weird Al” Yankovic tribute album Twenty-Six and a Half.
The Logan Whitehurst Memorial Award for Excellence in Comedy Music (Logan Awards) is a set of awards presented by The Funny Music Project. The awards are to be presented annually, in three categories: Outstanding Original Comedy Song, Outstanding Parody Song, Outstanding Comedy Music Video. The Logan Awards were named after musician, Logan Whitehurst, who passed away in 2006 from brain cancer and who’s musical comedy work had caught the eye (and ears) of Dr. Demento and fans of his show.
