In the darkened cove of a friendly spot representing good times, a place to imbibe and enjoy the company of friends and turn strangers into comrades, I found heaven in the mixture of fingers of grace plucking the lady who will never forsake her man, vocal cords sending out a beautiful blend of jazz and blues lyrics into the atmosphere leaving every lady in the room feeling like she was the only woman and he was the only man, and every man thinking “Damn, this dude has got skills!”
That dude is Kevin Sandbloom.
Opening for Kevin was a local favorite, Michael Carter (better known as Mike C). Mike C came out with a bang! My favorite piece of the night had a line in it in response to the question “Mike, how come you always write angry poetry?” Mike’s response: “Because my life has been more guns than roses!”.
After Mike, came one of the most humble poets I have ever had the pleasure to meet and see perform: Matthew Cuban Hernandez from Duvall, Florida. Cuban is a favorite on the slam circuit and poured his soul out onto the stage as it reverberated off the souls of his audience.
Then there was the grand slam, Kevin. His song “Woman” is the best rendition of poetry over music, guitar, and singing that I have ever heard. A highlight of the evening: the grand finale consisting of Kevin’s version of Sade’s song “Is It A Crime” collaborating with Cuban for a few stanzas of dope poetry.
Bartender, Kevin, is a hoot. I love his sense of humor as he cracks jokes, yet never cracks a smile (making it even funnier when he speaks the language of sarcasm so fluently). Kevin also doubles as local artist “Phil’s” agent. There is a plethora of incredible artwork of varying themes, sizes, and prices on display at Locals Only. When I asked the artist his name, he simply said “Phil”, and said if anyone wants to purchase any pictures featured here to call Kevin at the bar (I smile).
Default: Vid is NOT from Metric Mondays, It is from Youtube. We had technical difficulties and could not get the grand finale.
The hosts, St. Peace and Henzbo, enhance the experience of the show. I love the way I am able to laugh and let go withhin the walls of this bar, which I (under the norm) may have bypassed, be it not for poetry. I would have truly been missing out!
Henzbo says of Metric Mondays:
“Metric Mondays” is the only officially certified Poetry Slam in the state of Indiana. Once a month the best poets in Indianapolis battle on stage in attempt to energize the audience, impress the judges, and win the $50 cash prize. Each show we feature a touring professional poet–some previous acts have been national and world finalists, slam legends, and have appeared on networks such as MTV, BET, and HBO. We also host an open mic for amateur poets who want to come and share their work. Our venue is a safe space and is welcome to people from all backgrounds. The show is every last Monday of the month at Locals Only Arts and Music Pub, located on 2449 E 56th St in Indianapolis. 21 and up. Only 5 dollars to watch, and 3 to get on the mic. The show is at 8:30.
WE also host an all ages event the first Saturday of every month at Indy Hostel, located at 4903 Winthrop Ave. This show also features a touring artist, open mic, and poetry slam. While all ages are welcome there may be mature content, so chaperones are encouraged for patrons 16 and younger. The show starts at 8 pm and is only 3 dollars.
