Chef competition raises funds to feed hungry citizens of Livingston County
On Thursday, August 11, 2011, a greenhouse at Bordine’s Nursery in Brighton will become Kitchen Stadium, and the site for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan’s 7th annual Iron Chef Competition. The battle raises funds for Gleaners’ Shared Harvest Pantry, their 2,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in Howell. The greenhouse doors open at 6 p.m. – the competition begins at 7 p.m.
James McNulty, executive chef of Downtown Martini Bar & Grille in Brighton, returns to the Iron Chef contest challenging executive chef Tammy Young, of Boomtown Kitchen and Tap in Brighton. The battle begins when the chefs take their places in Kitchen Stadium, and the secret ingredient is revealed. Each chef must prepare an appetizer, entrée and dessert for a panel of judges.
For the fifth consecutive year WDIV Local 4 News Anchor Steve Garagiola returns as the Kitchen Stadium moderator with Detroit News Columnist Neal Rubin providing “color commentary”. The 2011 judges include: Detroit News Food Writer Kate Lawson, WHMI 93.5 News Reporter Jessica Mathews, 2009 and 2010 Iron Chef Champion Chef Steve Pilon, Livingston community leader Jeanette Berry, Livingston Daily Press & Argus John Utter and Chef Douglas St. Souver, Food Network Challenger winner.
In addition to the head-to-head culinary battle, guests have the opportunity to taste a selection of hors d’ oeuvres and desserts from local restaurants, enjoy a glass of wine or beer, and bid on a variety of items in the silent auction. The Iron Chef challengers will each prepare a special dish for patrons, who will vote for the event’s Fan Favorite.
New in 2011: three lucky people will have an opportunity to taste one of the chef’s three competing dishes during the battle from a front row Kitchen Stadium seat! Guests can enter the Tasting Chance drawing with a nominal donation. Charter One Foundation and other generous sponsors will match all Tasting Chance donations dollar-for-dollar, as part of the Hunger Free Summer campaign where $1 provides eight meals.
The 2010 Iron Chef event raised $70,000, the equivalent of 210,000 meals.
Tickets are $50. To purchase tickets, visit www.ironchefevent.com or call Suzette Hohendorf at 313-923-3535 ext 243. Sponsorships opportunities are available.
