While having a hearty breakfast at Marie Callender’s on Pacific Avenue in Glendale, Big Steve asks:” Who is this guy, Canelo is planning to fight in September, Alfonso Gomez? I have never heard of him.”
Alfonso Gomez originally won the hearts of American fight fans in 2004 on a first year run of popular Contender series when he challenged and beat tournament favorite, Peter Manfredo Jr. Since then he broke the hearts of the same fans when he brutally knocked out and practically retired Arturo Gatti in 2007 and then did the same thing to an aging Mexican ring great, Jose Luis Castillo in 2010.
Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, widely popular Alfonso Gomez lives and trains in Southern California. At the age of thirty he has developed into a complete fighter and a tough out for anybody.“It’s a great opportunity and I’m going to take full advantage of it,” said Gomez (23-4-2,12KO’S) who will challenge Saul Alvarez for WBC light middleweight title on September 17th at Stapples Center in Los Angles:” From the very first second they told me this fight is going to happen I’ve been in the gym. I don’t want to leave anything behind. I don’t want to have any excises.”

Alfonso Gomez vs. Canelo Alvarez championship bout will be a co- feature of a twin bill PPV telecast with a main event from Las Vegas with Floyd Mayweather facing WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. Even in his wildest dreams Alfonso Gomez could not imagine being featured on a biggest boxing event of 2011, headlining at Stapples center with over one million homes tuning in and buying Pay Per View.
“I am hungry and ready to rock’n’roll,” said Gomez during LA press conference to announce the fight:” They chose me because they believe I pose the least amount of threat to their champion, but my threat does not come from my fists or my hard work, because I’ve done that; it comes from within, from that hot wide desire I have to become a world champion. It just burns inside. It’s become an obsession and I plan on September 17th to unleash the beast that is within me and take that world title away from him.”
Gomez, who has been campaigning as a welterweight and won his last fight by knock out, is not concerned about moving up to light middleweight division to challenge Canelo Alvarez, because he has a plan.
“ I’m going to go in there and try to go for a knock out, ”said Gomez who trains at the Azteca gym in Los Angeles:” Because I know and everybody knows how the business goes. If this fight actually goes the distance, it’s very well probable they are going to give him the fight, since he is the business, but I plan to take that idea away. I plan to ruin all their plans, because I am mentally focused, mentally ready and more than anything I am ready to become a world champion. My time is due, my efforts are due and this is my time.”
It seems like Alfonso Gomez has been dreaming about this moment all his life. Facing twenty one years old undefeated champion, Saul Alvarez, like a true Mexican warrior, Alfonso is willing to lay it all on the line.
Another authentic Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez promised to leave his life in the ring prior to facing Manny Pacquaio for the second time in 2008; the result was one of the best fights of sweet science in the twenty first century.
On Tuesday in Los Angeles, from the podium, Alfonso Gomez said:” Unlike his previous opponents, I plan to go in there and die in that ring in order for me to take that belt.” Let’s hope he doesn’t have to.
