- WATCH VIDEOS: LeBron James drops in on Cleveland-area “THE WORD” Church unexpectedly
Oftentimes when I leave my Akron-area health club I will drive past LeBron James’ home and take a peek at the driveway, wondering if our “native son” has returned home yet for a respite from all that Miami sun and false fun, or if he’s taken his talents from South Beach away to some far-off exclusive, deserted Mediterranean locale to hide in shame in the wake of the “Big 3” light show machismo failure.
On a recent Wednesday, I could’ve looked no farther than my very own sanctuary — “THE WORD” Church – where “Bron Bron” dropped in unexpectedly, but received much acceptance and love, to play in the Chris Chambers City League Classic, which takes place in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, at the church’s main location.
“As you can see, LeBron James stopped by out of nowhere, just dunking and enjoying,” said Dr. R. A. Vernon, the popular Senior Pastor and Founder of the church, author of Size Does Matter.
“He’s still a son of Cleveland — I know, you wish he would’ve left on better terms,” Dr. Vernon continued, “but he’s a son of Cleveland and of Akron and we should love him.”
Perhaps James knew deep inside, despite all the #23 jersey-burning vitriol spewed by some Clevelanders, that he would find a safe haven in the tourney inside the place of worship.

And it wasn’t just James who surprised the delighted crowd at the summer league, but Christian Eyenga as well, whom an NBA announcer calls “the young rookie from the Congo” in a video on the same page showing an amazing slam dunk.
Looks like the Cavs can look forward to Eyenga’s skills at least through the 2012-2013 season.
Dru Joyce III and Earl Antoine Boykins were also in attendance.
The surprise LeBron James visit videos are racking up the views, being shared on Facebook, and drawing the attention of national news organizations such as NBC, CBS, USA Today and others.
“What was amazing to me was sitting in my church and watching two top tier NBA players…courtside,” Dr. Vernon said.
Courtside action without courtside prices, as children and adults from around the city got to enjoy LeBron’s fadeaway jumpers and nasty dunks up close and personal.
“God is moving; it’s powerful. God gave us this building and we’re giving it back to the city,” declared Dr. Vernon.
