Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Landry Jones is the latest member of the 2012 football team to hear his name mentioned on an awards watch list. The Davey O’Brien Watch List announced Jones is one of the top quarterback under consideration on Friday, July 15.
In 2011, Jones finished the year as a semi-finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and hopes to finally capture the award this season. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award.
In 2011, Landry Jones won the Sammy Baugh Award as the nation’s top passer. Jones enters the 2012 season holding seven Oklahoma passing and total offense records.
Last season, Jones tied the single-game yardage mark with 468 yards on a Sooner record 62 attempts against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He also set the single-season completion record with 371 completions and attempts record with 568. He also holds the season (2) and career (3) record for 400-yard passing games.
In 2010, Jones completed .656 of his passes for 4,718 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He finished the year as the Fiesta Bowl MVP, leading Oklahoma to the BCS win over UConn.
The watch list will be narrowed to 16 players on Monday, October 24 and the foundation will announce three finalists on Monday, November 21. The winner will be announced on Thursday. December 8.
