TFH Publications has a fun new series out called Dogs 101 which is cosponsored with Animal Planet. The books are breed books, which are intended for families with a new dog, either puppy or adult rescue or rehome; anyone researching and interested in the breed and as a resource for anyone who counts himself or herself a fancier of that breed.
I have a couple of the series to review and just finished Labrador Retriever by Terry Albert last night. This is a really fun book and a very realistic look at the Labrador Retriever as a family member. Terry brings extensive experience as a Lab owner and Lab foster Mom to her writing. You feel like you are sitting in her kitchen enjoying a cup of tea (hot or ice your choice) while you “talk dogs”.
While this is not a definitive tome on the Labrador Retriever, there is plenty of breed information including history as well as practical training and care advice. Having had a Lab I felt quite familiar with the breed but i still picked up some new info. For example, I tend to think of chocolate Labs as the “latecomer color” in the breed, but it is really the yellows who had to establish their rightful place.
The nine chapters literally cover Labs from head to tail with Origins leading through Characteristics and Care chapters to Activities for you to share with your very own Lab. The book is a quick guide, so if you need to get some immediate advice on crate training and housetraining as you head for home with your new Lab puppy, you can flip to pages 92 through 96 for help.
“Dog Tale” and “Puppy Pointer” are sidebars that give you quick “spot on” advice or great real life Lab tales. They both add to making this a very user friendly book.
The book is a ring binder format with easy to read print and plenty of wonderful photos for all Lab lovers to enjoy. There is a nice hard cover, so keep it up and away from your teething Lab puppy!
Reasonably priced at $15.95, the book is currently discounted at Dogwise.com to just $11.95. This book would make a great gift for anyone already committed to adding a Lab to his or her family or even thinking about the breed for a new family member. A wonderful puppy shower gift as well. Team it up with DogLife Labrador Retriever by Linda Rehkopf and you have a great Lab library!
