Just as soon as families seem to be getting the hang of getting up early to take the kids to school and reconciling themselves that the dog days of summer are over, Labor Day appears giving families one last chance for a three day hooray before we begin the downward spiral of work and school until Christmas break. For many Houston area families this three day weekend gives us a last chance to take a road trip to several nearby cities and enjoy the last of our summer fun.
Living in Houston we can easily visit:
Lake Conroe offers families the chance to stay the weekend at one of the many lakeside resorts like La Torretta Lake Resort and Spa as well as many area attractions like the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County, Sam Houston National Forest, the Bernhardt Winery, take a tour of the Southern Star Brewery, enjoy a day at the Aquatic Center or Splashtown, and dine out. Lake Conroe also offers many opportunities for water sports like fishing, boating and jet skis.
New Braunfels is just a short drive away too and you can bet that the Guadalupe River will be busy with tubes, fishing, and boats. But don’t worry there are still plenty of other family friendly activities in the area including the Schlitterbahn Waterpark, (voted “Best Waterpark” 12 years in a row and is a frequent winner on the Travel Channel’s list of best). For dining and entertainment in New Braunfels you may want to stop at the Friesenhaus or Adobe Café. Other entertainment includes the Animal World and Snake Farm, Natural Bridge Caverns, and the McKenna Children’s Museum. Find out more about these places and plan your trip using this New Braunfels Guide to Family Friendly Dining and Attractions.
South Padre Island is a little bit further to drive, but there are many opportunities for the whole family to relax and enjoy over Labor Day weekend. Head to the beach and build sand castles. Head to the Sea Turtle, Inc. South Padre Island, TX, South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center, The Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, The Gladys Porter Zoo and The Original Dolphin Watch at The Sea Ranch Marina. Use this guide to South Padre Island to help you find out more about these attractions.
I wouldn’t plan on seeing any fireworks this Labor Day weekend anywhere in Houston due to the drought and burn ban
If you are heading out this three day holiday weekend, you may want to take advantage of these helpful driving tips from AAA, since they estimate that approximately 1.88 million Texans plan to drive this Labor Day holiday weekend.
