Labor Day is September 5, 2011 and Tuesday it has created an Internet buzz a few days before the long weekend begins. Every year people around the world ask “What is Labor Day?” and “How did Labor Day start?”
The Labor Day holiday didn’t originate in the US, but it was first celebrated in the United States on September 5, 1882. This holiday originated in other countries first, then in Canada in the 1870s. In the after math of many deaths from the hands of the US military and Marshalls during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland made reconciling with labor a priority and the holiday in the US emerged, according to Wikipedia.
In the US, Labor Day is always the first Monday in September. Over the years, many traditions have been added to the US holiday including parades, festivities for the family, BBQs, water sports, fireworks, and public events. Many people also view Labor Day as the end of summer. It has become a day of rest, relaxation, and spending time with the family. Labor Day is also known in the US as when the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has it’s annual Telethon. Jerry Lewis will not be hosting the MDA Telethon this year, for the first time in 46 years.
Labor Day weekend is also the start of football season in the US…so enjoy.
