With all the makeup choices available to women today it’s hard to determine what the best product for the best value is. This is where “Dina’s Kiss and Makeup” comes in. The line is based out of Hoboken and you will love every aspect of the product, from the modern hot pink cameo style logo to the high end value at a moderate price. See what the founder of Dina’s Kiss and Makeup, Dina Racciatti, has to say about her unique product line.
We hear you were on the Style Network’s Jerseylicious. Tell us about it.
Yes I was! I filmed some episodes on Season 2. I was originally contacted by the casting director to attend an event, but when I told them I was a makeup artist I got invited to work in the salon. If you look closely and listen hard enough, you’ll catch me! People don’t realize there are so many endless hours that go into making just 30 seconds on television. If you see me in the background for a half of a second, trust me when I say that it took 12 hours of filming for that to happen!
What inspired you to create your own makeup line?
Two things inspired me to create DKM Cosmetics. The first was convenience. I wanted the best makeup to be a one-stop-shop. As an artist, I was really tired of buying one product from one company and another product elsewhere. It became a rat race to find everything and it was all so expensive.
The second thing that inspired me was the challenge. Right when I turned 18 I knew I wanted to begin my own brand. I truly thought it was something I would have to wait many years to even begin due to costs, popularity, and the challenges with publicity. Then I asked myself a question: “It’s going to be hard-but harder than what?” A college professor of mine would always ask that question and it puts every challenge into perspective. It makes you realize that we hold ourselves back with our own thoughts! So I decided to put my big girl pants on and get moving!
You don’t just have the makeup line, you are also a makeup artist. Tell us a bit about it.
I had horrendous cystic acne starting at age 11 or 12. With my pale skin, it was so embarrassing. There were days that I didn’t even want to go to school because I had a new red bump to hide behind. I felt ugly. I felt like a reject. I will never forget my mother bringing home “Dermablend Leg & Body Cover.” It was the only thing that would help my skin look normal and I literally could not be myself without it. It was then I realized how important makeup is in a woman’s life. People are so quick to say, “Makeup is false advertising, it’s so shallow and not important.” Lies!!! Just that little bit of concealer made me feel so much more confident and happy. So that’s where it all began. Then I started playing around with colors but I had no idea what I was doing. Throughout high school, I was just guessing like everyone else. But right before college, I found a local makeup class and jumped on it.
I spent hours learning about basic beauty, special effects, color theory, science, and high fashion. Then I got to teach that same class around the country. I fell in love with teaching and nothing could ever compare to the love and thanks I received from my students. I was a kid teaching adults- it was so surreal and rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to directed countless photo shoots, work on a movie set, work with some great celebrities, work for major retailers, be the head artist at a mega-salon, and work with dozens of brides.
What is different about your line from the others available?
My line is personal. My line has whatever you’re looking for. If you don’t see it there, I will get it for you.
DKM comes from an artist’s passion to create beauty and confidence. Nothing makes me love my job more than a bride looking in the mirror and saying, “Wow, it’s perfect.” My line has over 120 eye shadows, endless palettes, different textures, and options galore. The best thing about it? If I don’t like a product as the artist, it’s not going into the lineup. I won’t put a product in that I think is average just to make a sale because that compromises the value of the brand and the message I want everyone to hear.
When you shop DKM Cosmetics, you also have your own personal makeup artist as your shopping consultant- the big retailers can’t offer that. Women call and e-mail me asking for advice and I’m more than happy to help them find their perfect product.
Quick – pick a favorite product, just one.
Are you trying to torture me?! It’s like asking a mother who her favorite child is. I might have to go with my Lash Building Fiber Mascara. It’s so amazing.
Now that I answered that, I think it’s only fair to give a TOP 10!!! (in no specific order)
1. Lash Building Fiber Mascara
2. DKM Eye Cream- reduces dark circles and puffiness instantly. Keep it in the fridge for a cool miracle.
3. Two-Way Foundation- can be used wet or dry and it’s perfect when you’re feeling low maintenance but still want to look picture perfect.
4. Corrector Pots- just the perfect amount of coverage without getting cakey.
5. Matte Bronze Tanning Powder- it’s just one of those products that looks great on everyone.
6. Prophecy Silky Shadow- again, looks great on everyone! It’s a pink/tan shadow with a slight shimmer and brightens up the eyes instantly.
7. Black Out Gel Liner- love at first brush stroke.
8. Aztec Blush- it’s a bronze shimmer that I use on 99 out of 100 clients. It’s just that fab.
9. Magical Duo Brush- a mix of synthetic with cruelty-free animal hair. Other retailers sell it for three times as much!
10. Oil Control Blot Powder- it’s see through. It evens out your makeover. It keeps the look locked down for hours on end.
Do you have anything new and exciting coming up for DKM Cosmetics?
Always! I just went to the Makeup Manufacturer’s show in NYC and found some awesome new products that I’m working on. I’m definitely bringing in a Mousse Foundation line. Right now I’m just testing out formulas, but I can’t wait to launch it. There will also be some new, customizable palettes where you can pick your shades and pop them right in.
I do have some “breaking news” that only a handful of people have heard. For the last few months, I’ve been working on a DKM Cosmetics TV Pilot. I know it’s a stretch, so I’m trying not to get too excited. It might take one year, it might take 10 years, and it might never happen. I’m just relaxing with the thought and letting fate take its course.
Where can us Jersey girls buy your products?
DKMCosmetics.com! The site is great and constantly being updated. There are also some really fun tutorials to show you how to do things and what products I use. I still have some more products to add but 95% of the items are all there. I’m also looking to get DKM into retail locations.
So there you have it Jersey girls. In addition to visiting the website, you can also reach out to Dina on Dina’s Kiss and Makeup’s Facebook page for more information on any of the products that she mentioned. You’ll be sure to enjoy any item you purchase from her!
