Controversial rapper Kanye West is now coming under fire internationally. He was just recently added to a growing number of artists whose music has been banned online in China. The song that landed him on the list? “E.T.” which is Ye’s smash hit with Pop superstar Katy Perry. Miss Perry’s music has been banned as well. The ban includes the general internet and personal websites. The people behind the ban are the Ministry Of Culture Department. “E.T.” is just one of about a hundred songs banned by the department. The Ministry feels that Ye and the others are a threat to the integrity of the Chinese culture.
The Ministry went on to say that the listening of the music disturbs the online music market order in China and endangers national cultural safety. This due to the fact that the Ministry considers the music to be tasteless and vulgar. This makes for the third major time that the Ministry has issued a ban on music. And this is no new practice either. Reports state that the Chinese government has been regulating music on the internet for about two years now. Other artists not getting much love in China include the likes of: Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Britney Spears, and many more. No further details regarding the ban are available at this time. Should more info be revealed, there will definitely be an update.
**My Two Cents: I find this very interesting and am curious to know more about how this works. For example, does the ban include radio and television too? How exactly is regulation handled? What are the consequences for listening to banned music? And the list could go on and on. Might have to do some personal research and do a post. On another note, I would die if music was regulated here in the United States. Music is one of the few things I hold sacred and I have no tolerance for anyone messing with my tunes. My heart goes out to all the music lovers in China, that’s a bummer. I understand the reasoning behind it to a certain extent. However, if cultural values are properly established in the first place, no song or artist should be able to change that. How the Chinese culture is impacted should come from the people themselves. But to each his own, I guess.
While the above mentioned artists may not be accepted in China, we have welcomed almost all of them with open arms here in Milwaukee. Kanye, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears were all apart of this year’s Summerfest. They put on very crowd pleasing shows at the Marcus Amphitheatre. And Lady Gaga visited Milwaukee last year at the Bradley Center via her Monster Ball Tour. She too put on an amazing show for those in attendance. Thank goodness we are free to embrace music as we please.
