Justin Bieber’s name appears everywhere today, more recently in an advertisment for young girls T-Shirts that promote beauty over brains. That’s until people caused an uproar and the T-Shirt was pulled. JCPenney’s online catalog offered a T-Shirt that says “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me,” according to ABC News.
While it wasn’t endorsed by Justin Bieber, the online catalog wrote, “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out?” She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.” JCPenney should know that even Justin Bieber shouldn’t get in the way of homework!
Both the T-Shirt and the Justin Bieber comment are down from the website, but what were they thinking? It sounds like the T-Shirt was being marketed to a new crop of diva’s that would rather primp and look beautiful than concentrate on their academics.
People who saw this T-Shirt in the JCPenney online page started an uproar. The online petition website, Change.org even created a petition with the title, “Stop selling clothing with sexist messages for girls..”
The petition was addressed to the Chairman and CEO of JCPenney, Mike Ulman III, and it said, “Under the guise of being ‘cute,’ J.C. Penney is promoting merchandise that encourages girls to value looks over brains; to leave academics to the boys, and to aspire to nothing more than fawning after Justin Bieber.”
JCPenney spokesperson, Ann Marie Bishop, said that the T-Shirt was immediately discontinued and that the company agrees that it is not an appropriate message. She also apologized for the incident.
