The Debt Ceiling debate has been going on for over a month now (at least) and it seems like once again, it will be an 11th hour that finally puts an end to this issue. The fiasco is affecting the entire country, including Richmond.
Over the span of this argument, there has been much incendiary language on both sides. The mudslinging and partisanship is especially disappointing since the people held in limbo (Americans) don’t seem to be given any consideration. One of the top figures in the debt ceiling battle is Representative Eric Cantor, the Republican Virginia Congressman from Richmond. As the House Majority Leader, he carries a lot of weight and therefore is involved in many of the discussions that have taken place. In the midst of these talks, several different groups have demonstrated outside of Cantor’s Richmond Office in the West End. The Richmond Tea Party gathered outside his office to show their support. According to reports, the Party wanted to make sure Cantor did not fault in his obstinance to raising the debt ceiling. Meanwhile, propronents of the other side of the spectrum showed up outside his office to show their anger and dissaproval. While there was no reported violence, protestors on both sides were vocal and visible while they were at the office. This isn’t the first time Cantor’s Richmond Office has had visitors. Last year, a bullet went through a front room window of the office. No one was hurt, but the event was taken seriously nonetheless.
No matter who is in charge, both parties are to blame for making this “issue” into the big disaster it has become. Now that mess has leaked into Richmond. Let’s hope they can get it fixed, and not make this “mess” any worse.
