A Wayne County jury took less than an hour of deliberation Thursday to find Gregory Harris guilty of kidnapping and second degree murder in the killing of his former girlfriend Zilphia Craig. The 53-year-old Harris had been the only suspect after the woman’s body was discovered.
Craig, 47, had been legally blind for five years when she disappeared in January. When relatives and DPD officers performed a welfare check of her unit at the On the Riverfront apartment complex, they found evidence of foul play. The apartment, normally kept very neat, had been ransacked. Also, blood had been found in Craig’s bedroom, and there was some evidence that valuables had been taken.
Relatives told police that they had been unable to contact Gregory Harris, Craig’s on again off again boyfriend who had been threatening her.
Then, on February 2nd, Craig’s decomposing body was discovered by the DPD. It was lying under a bed in an apartment off Woodward Ave. Just five days later, Gregory Harris was arrested and charged with second degree murder, kidnapping, and being an habitual offender.
Now Harrison has been convicted as charged.
He should be sentenced next month, and faces a maximum of life in prison.
