The stylin’ Galileo travel trailer is hand-built in the enormous 90,000 square foot JAG Mobile Solutions (JMS) plant in Howe, Indiana. A manufacturer of specialty commercial trailers – like mobile restrooms, shower rooms, bunk houses, kitchens and laundry units – JMS debuted the head turning Galileo travel trailer back in 2009 at the annual PRVCA Pennsylvania RV & Camping Show and – in under 12 months – has expanded their product portfolio to include two 21’ and two 29′ travel trailer models.
“Our goal was to build a quality long-lasting RV that didn’t look like anyone else,” said Brynn Colin, Solutions Coordinator at JMS. A sentiment echoed by William Gibson, an enthusiastic RVer and President of JMS, who fittingly named the travel trailer after the famous Italian, Galileo Galilei, a Renaissance physicist and astronomer celebrated for his theoretical and technical innovations. “This is a passion project. We don’t want to make the most RVs. We want to make amazing RVs – one at a time.”
“Most of our 21 footers start off at under $32,000 but by the time people pick options they typically end up in the neighbourhood of $36,000,” said Brynn, who went on to add that, “an average price for a nicely equipped 29 footer would be $44,000-46,000,” which, by any reckoning, is an extremely competitively priced trailer in a market that – with a few notable exceptions – is brimming with mediocrity.
The Galileo’s sleek aerodynamic exterior is marvellously complemented by its elegant interior which utilizes furniture grade custom cabinetry, cedar-lined wardrobes, plush upholstery and upscale hardware. A number of clever design features help maximise interior space including a foldaway expandable table which enables two people to share a cosy meal together – the 21S has a jump seat on the arm of the sofa to facilitate this – or you can use the two drop in leaves and seat up to five. The 29’ “Rear Living” floor plan which provides two 60”x 80” “L” shaped sofa beds (which can seat up to 10 people) at either end of the trailer. This allows the trailer to be split into two distinct living areas which supplies a degree of separation from children (as and when required), adds some additional privacy for the in-laws or allows you to utilize one section as a mobile office.
A bespoke and unquestionably exclusive unit the “Galileo RS is immediately identified by the unique exterior styling,” said Gibson. “Not only does it look great, the aerodynamics help improve towability, while improving fuel economy.”
The Galileo’s composite Unifiber construction and fibreglass roof provides both strength and durability in equal measure whilst the trailer’s already excellent insulation properties can be supplemented by the deluxe winterization package – for those ice fishing, winter skiing and snowboarding trips – which is rated to 0 degrees (-17 degrees Celsius). Interior materials are nearly completely free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) whilst a raft of additional eco-friendly features, including natural (and environmentally renewable) bamboo and cork flooring, low energy LED lighting, a high efficiency air conditioner and a 65W solar array all help demonstrate the Galileo’s green credentials and the company’s commitment to keeping an “eco-eye.”
The neatly laid-out galley features over-sized appliances – fridge/freezer, range and convection/microwave oven – and in-trailer entertainment is provided by an optional Bose™ Acoustimass system, Sony 22″ LCD HDTV, Sony AM/FM/CD/DVD Player and Sirius Satellite Radio. A very flexible product, the Galileo is equally at home being used as a mobile office suite or as a weekending caravan.
JMS believes that providing outstanding customer service is the only way to build repeat business. “We have a great warranty, take exceptional care of our customers and our (business) model allows us to oversee the customer service experience and ensure they are being treated well,” said Brynn. As an illustration of this point, when customers pick up their Galileo from the JMS factory they can opt to spend the night at a nearby RV campground – courtesy of JMS – where they can test out their new travel trailer. If there are operational questions, JMS will send a technician to your rig to assist. Potential customers concerned about the absence of a conventional dealer network should note that the “built to order” Galileo enjoys a warranty rate that is considerably below the industry average. Lead time for the finished product is only about 8 weeks, but inventory is located at select stocking locations for viewing or immediate delivery for those who would prefer something sooner. The Galileo includes an industry leading two year warranty and should repairs be necessary they are carried out either at the JMS factory or at a JMS designated service center nationwide.
There are, regrettably, very few notable design gems in the travel trailer market place where economies of scale invariably dictate that function takes precedence over form. Some praiseworthy exceptions to this rule are the Dan Rodabaugh designed Earthbound and Evergreen Element travel trailers, the retro styled units produced by renowned industry veteran Airstream Inc. (THOR), along with Airstream conceptual derivatives like the Ecostream – with an interior designed by former BBC Top Gear presenter, Steve Berry. That the JMS Galileo can comfortably stand shoulder to shoulder with such industry luminaries is praise indeed.
