From time to time, Eli and I come across exceptionally beautiful ladies at the events we frequent in Manhattan. By beauty, I refer to the inner kind that emanates from people who are content on their life’s path, who have a gift that they enjoy sharing with the world.
One such lady who comes to mind is Courtney Dawson, who despite her battle with scleroderma has chosen be an advocate by creating the Dawson Scleroderma Foundation. Despite her illness, Courtney always has a positive and healthy attitude, living life to the fullest. Eli and I were so impressed with her that we participated with her team in the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Walk along Battery Park in June. Courtney led the team with a smile, wearing a “Life is Half Full” pendant created in her honor by fashion designer Renée Greenstein, with 20% of all sales benefitting the Dawson Scleroderma Foundation. The pendant, half full with beautiful blue topaz, more than sums up Courtney’s personality and philosophy.
At a recent book signing, Sandy Hirsch, the designer/owner of Wags & Tags, displayed her unique pendants for dogs and people. The company was inspired by her Golden Retriever, Jesse, for whom she was never able to find adequate dog tags. Tired of trying out numerous flimsy tags, Sandy decided to take matters into her own hands by consulting with jewelers and coming up with sophisticated human quality dog tags made of precious metals and stones. There are even beautiful matching owner and pup pendants, perfect for New York doggie moms who like to match their pups.
Another upbeat lady who creates gems in the New York dog scene is Sandra Winick, the creator of Bling Bone™, who always greets us with a smile. After an international career in modeling, Brazilian-born Sandra has spread her beauty to the world in the form of her jewelry line, Bling Bone, along with help from her Chihuahuas Kilo and Sancho. A commitment to pets, paired with a family history of over 50 years in the fine jewelry industry in NYC, was the perfect formula to breed a beautiful pet jewelry line.
Sandra has donated necklaces to several dog events we have attended, to help raise funds for the Mayor’s Alliance and other animal rescue organizations. In fact, she will be showing her creations at the upcoming Bling Bone™ Bubbles & Biscuits Summer Shopping Event on August 13 at Catherine Malandrino’s Boutique in East Hampton. 15% of proceeds from everything sold from the store and trunk show will benefit the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons. If you are free, stop by and check it out – dogs are invited and champagne will be served.
We have a choice in life. We can walk around with resentment about our lot in life, or we can make diamonds out of what at first glance may appear to be coal. As William Shakespeare said: “My crown is in my heart, not in my hand, nor decked with diamonds and Indian stones, nor to be seen; my crown is called contentment; a crown it is, that seldom kings enjoy.” These ladies seem to have all mastered the art of refining both inner and outer jewels.
