As the running campaign for the next president begins, religious voters of Greensboro, North Carolina remember March 26, 2008 with dread. It was on this day that then-presidential-candidate Barrack Obama spoke at the town hall meeting in Greensboro. What was one of the topics of discussion? – Obama’s suggestion that Jesus Christ was not the only way to heaven. He tried to explain that he believed people of all faiths were judged on their morality towards humanity, not on their credence to God. Many saw this as an anti-Christian motive to grab non-Christian voters, and a deceitful remark seeing as he claimed himself a Christian. What many don’t realize though is that by technicality, Obama is correct. According to the Christian faith, it is not Jesus who is the lamb of God.
Jesus Christ is not the savior’s name. Ask many elementary school students what Jesus’ last name is, and Christ will be their answer. Truth be told, Christ is the English term for the Greek word “Khristos” (Χριστός), which translates as “anointed one.” The word Khristos is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Mashiach, which translates as “anointed”. It is from this Hebrew word that we get the term “Messiah”. Though many in the Torah have been named Mashiach as a term for one who helps the Jewish people in times of need, it was Jesus Christ who would eventually take the term to the next level as a title of anointment to express the connection between He and The Father.
Jesus’ name starts with a J, a letter and sound not found in the Hebrew or Aramaic language. The question then becomes, what was his name? The etymology of the name has traveled through many languages. Jesus in modern times is an English translation of the Latin name Iesus. Iesus is the Latin translation of the Greek name Iesous. Iesous is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name Yehoshua, which in Aramaic (the likely language of Jesus) is Yeshua. Yehoshua/Yeshua is translated into English as Joshua. Joshua, or Yeshua, is the true name of the Son of God.
In Jewish tradition and following the culture of the times, last names did not exist. Everyone, however, had two names. Their first name, followed by the word “Ben” or “Bin” (which means “son” or “son of”) and then the first name of their father. Jews and Arabs to this day still follow this practice. This is where Osama Bin Laden (Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden) got his name. Osama is his first name, and Bin means “son of”. Jesus’ father’s name was Joseph, or in Aramaic, Yosef. It is safe to say that his followers, disciples, family, and even God called him Yeshua Ben Yosef.
So we see that technically it is not Jesus who guides us to The Father, it is not Christ who hung on the cross, and it is not Jesus Christ who is the Son of God. In Christianity, the perfect Jewish soul by the name of Yeshua Ben Yosef is the Alpha, the Omega and the savior of mankind.
