Atlanta fashionistas, looks like JC Penney was just courting controversy when their merchandising staff decided to buy and sell this “I’m too pretty T-shirt” on their website!
And granted, there are many of us who regard ourselves as being “too pretty” to try hard at anything – things just seem to fall into our laps – without even trying!
Certainly, that was the sentiment behind the message emblazoned on a long-sleeved T-shirt JC Penney was selling that read, “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me,” which was retailing at $16.99 but got marked down to “only $9.99!” at J. C. Penney.
However, JC Penney came for to say, “…We agree that the ‘Too Pretty’ t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale.”
The national retailer for the middle class clothing shopper, say opposed to the likes of “Saks Fifth Avenue” or “Neiman Marcus” who tend to appeal to the buying power of the elite, was unwittingly promoting the notion that being smart and beautiful are mutually exclusive. Someone went even further and said that they should go with a witty statement like, “Smart girls don’t get asked to prom!”
I will personally vouch for that sort of sentiment when a date during my tender years told me, “go ahead, use another big word” when I was all of seventeen, that left me feeling quite wounded and humiliated.
So, to Bradley (who wasn’t handsome at all, in hindsight) and all men out there who say cruel things to young, attractive women to beat them down, I’d like to say, “thanks, I will!” As my readers know, I’m quite fond of words and writing – even someone as “charming” as Bradley couldn’t take that away from me.
