Rain or shine, Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend is a true sign that summer has arrived. Now in its 35th year, the festival welcomes Paquito D’Rivera, Stefon Harris, Gerald Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Dee Daniels and more than 30 other jazz artists to Port Townsend, July 28-30, 2011. Hear mainstage performances at Fort Worden State Park’s McCurdy Pavilion and in seven club venues in the Victorian seaport. More than 30 concerts and events take place during the three days.
Led by Artistic Director John Clayton, this year’s edition includes a world premier performance of a big band composition from NEA Jazz Master Bill Holman, featuring nine-time Grammy Award winner Paquito D’Rivera.
In addition to the Mainstage Performanes is the popular Jazz in the Clubs, when festival performers join other jazz artists in performances. Venues include The Public House, Key City Playhuse, The Upstage, The Rose Theatre, Undertown, Castle Key and the Northwest Maritime Center. Jazz in the Clubs begins at 8 PM on Thursday and 10 PM Friday and Saturday. A wristband for all three days is $25.
Now in its fourth year is the Free Friday Workshop Blowout on July 29 from 9-4:30 PM, outdoor on the green of the Fort Worden Commons. This is an inside peek into Jazz Port Townsend workshops and master classes that will be running all week, including a free noontime concert by the Jazz Port Townsend Participant Big Band led by Clarence Acox. Tickets are also available at the venue box office, one hour prior to show time. Patrons under 18 are admitted free. Most Jazz in the Clubs venues are 21+.
