Fifteen year old singing and songwriting sensation, Jackson Guthy is poised to leave his mark on the music industry. As a natural born musician Guthy says he was playing the piano by age five and started picking up other instruments shortly thereafter. He wrote his first song at the age of nine and says, “Now I have my library of songs and I think I have over 300 hundred songs that I’ve written…or something like that.” Currently represented by the Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group who work with artists including System Of A Down, Alice In Chains, Cypress Hill, Deftones and OneRepublic (label / publishing). He’s currently putting the finishing touches on his debut album entitled Launch and has already premiered his lead single, “LOVING” on the Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier this year.
“I get inspiration for my lyrics from everyday experiences really, like with girls and school.” Jackson began our conversation, adding, “But of course as a 9 year old when I wrote my first song I probably wasn’t writing about girls. I probably started writing about lollipops and stuff.” With time and maturation his artistry and sound have now evolved and he says, “A lot of people might think from my first single, ‘LOVING’ it’s really going to be a pop record. But it’s actually a really dynamic, kind of more Rock/Pop type of album.” Continuing, “I’m just really excited for it because I want people who are listening to be like, ‘Oh this is not really what I expected. This is really cool.’”
As a young male pop star in the making many are drawing the obvious parallels between Guthy and Justin Bieber but he was quick to set the record straight telling me, “I don’t think people can really relate me to other artists like Justin Bieber. The only comparison would be my age and the art. When people hear my music, it speaks for itself and they’re going to be able to find me in a different kind of a category.” However Jackson does readily admit that he wouldn’t mind his musical career being compared to two of today’s biggest Pop influences disclosing, “Probably Bruno Mars as far as musically and then as far as performance and longevity in his career as well as being an entrepreneur probably Justin Timberlake.” Jackson even confessed that hit maker Bruno Mars sings a song he would dub his own personal theme song right now, “I really like ‘The Lazy Song’ and not so much because I’m lazy but because its just a really fun urban type song. And I walk around singing it all the time. Plus the video is really funny.”
With an already tangibly seasoned artistry and a debut album early in 2012 Jackson Guthy holds the promise of taking center stage in the Fall/Winter music class. He says it hasn’t come without its sacrifices and challenges but that he finds it all worth it, “I think what people don’t understand is that when you break in at such a young age you have to learn things you wouldn’t have learned until you are quite a bit older. I’ve had to give up a couple of things that I used to love to do, that I still love to do. But it’s really all for the sacrifice of doing what I love.” Concluding wisely, “You’ve got to give some stuff up to get some stuff back sometimes.”
