If you’re reading this, you survived both the earthquake and Hurricane Irene in the same week but your laptop probably ran out of battery long before electric power was restored to your neighborhood after the hurricane. I was fortunate to find the iRecharge Universal Rechargeable Battery for Laptops at Walmart online (with free Site-to-Store shipping to the Aberdeen store or a store near you) a few days before the hurricane so my laptop had power to spare through the storm.
The iRecharge battery works with more than 3000 laptop computers that require no more than 75 Watts of power. These include models from Compaq, HP, Acer, IBM, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Sony, Apple and Dell. A list of the compatible laptop models is printed on the back of the box. The iRecharge is not recommended for use with laptops that require more than 75 Watts of power.
The AC adapter for your laptop provides the power to charge the iRecharge battery. The battery comes with 6 input charging tips, 7 output power tips, an output cable and a user’s manual.
First select the correct input charging tip to connect your AC adapter to the iRecharge battery pack. Then select the output power tip to connect the output cable from the battery pack to the power port on the back of your laptop. Plug the other end of the output cable into the port on the iRecharge and then plug your ac adapter into the outlet or power strip.
The iRecharge Rechargeable Battery will charge your laptop battery and provide the power you need to keep working. How much extra battery time will, of course, depend upon your particular laptop configuration and what applications and any USB devices you may be using at the time. My Compaq Presario 1700 got a full 4 hours of extra battery time with the iRecharge.
Once the iRecharge battery is charged, you can use it as a standalone power source or keep it connected to your AC adapter so it will remain fully charged and ready to use when you need it. When using only the iRecharge battery, your laptop will display the little electrical plug on the taskbar just as if you were plugged into a wall outlet. You can easily check the remaining charge of the iRecharge battery by pushing the “check” button on the face of the battery. Full charge will display 4 green LED lights with fewer lights showing if the power remaining is less. Another light glows green to show that the battery is charged or red when it is charging.
The most amazing thing of all is the price. Walmart lists the iRecharge Rechargeable Battery for Laptops for only $7.88. I paid only $1.97 shipping and it arrived in just a couple of days. Walmart does offer their free Site-to-Store shipping for pickup at the Aberdeen store or a Walmart nearer to you. Similar battery packs sell for $80 and up. Walmart and a couple of sellers on Ebay seem to be the only ones selling the iRecharge. I suspect that when Walmart sells out, which they surely will at this price, the iRecharge will be gone forever so buy one while you can.
The iRecharge is made by Cellboost. You can visit their website to see the list of compatible laptops and check out the User’s Manual for the iRecharge. I did make several attempts to contact Cellboost by email but all messages were returned as undeliverable. The company may be in transition. I did not attempt calling them on the phone but there is an 800 number listed on their site if you want to give it a try.
