The fans have spoken, and their words finally mean something.
Iowa Corn unveiled the new Cy-Hawk Trophy this week, but after massive negativity around the state from fans, the media and anyone who had an opinion, change is coming.
At a press conference yesterday, Iowa Corn — the new sponsor of the Cy-Hawk Series — said that the newest design will not be used and it’s back to the drawing board.
There wasn’t a lot of positive feedback from the fans and media because most felt like the trophy represented the state of Iowa but had nothing to do with the football game. It was a picture of a farm family with an ear of corn. That says Iowa, yes, But what does that have to do with the game on the gridiron?
It is truly hard to please everybody in this day and age so coming up with a trophy idea is not the easiest thing in the world. Fans and media members sounded off all week about what the trophy should looked like. But if we were put in that spot could we have done any better? Some would like to think so but I am not sure my idea would make everyone happy.
Either way, Iowa Corn is trying to make the majority happy. After the news that the trophy design will change, that majority is smiling from ear to ear.
Obviously, the trophy will not be ready for this year’s game on September 10 in Ames. But Iowa Corn announced an interim trophy will be used. And don’t worry, they do not plan on bringing the recently designed trophy anywhere near Jack Trice Stadium.
It is hard to predict what direction Iowa Corn will go next, but it is safe to say that this trophy will scream FOOTBALL.
Will it be Herky on one side and Cy on the other with a football coming out of an ear of corn? Or will they implement legendary figures Nile Kinnick and Jack Trice? Can they somehow use all four?
Iowa Corn said in the press conference that they are willing to listen to ideas from the public and do what the people of Iowa want.
That is a good PR move because then if the trophy is not liked, Iowa Corn can just pin back to the fans and media because they had a say in this one.
My personal preference would be a large cornstalk with a football subbing in for an ear of corn in the middle and then Herky and Cy statues on each side. That would represent the football side of things and also represent the sponsor — Iowa Corn — in a positive way.
Does anyone else have any good ideas for what the trophy could look like?
