Casey Anthony’s Juror No. 2 has been outed on Facebook and Twitter. Unfortunately, the person outed isn’t really Juror No. 2.
The incident is another example of how false Internet posts can wreak havoc on a person’s life.
It seems, though it’s unclear, that the rumor began on the site TheDirty.com with the story “Doug Bliss Is One Of The Twelve Stupidest People Walking In America Right Now.” Unfortunately, it appears that TheDirty.com is one of the “most stupid” websites in America (stupidest isn’t a word, by the way).
That’s because Doug Bliss wasn’t one of the 12 jurors on the Casey Anthony case. At least TheDirty.com saw fit to remove the post from the site. The problem is, the story, along with details were Tweeted and “liked” on Facebook, as well. What is the maxim? What gets posted on the Internet, stays on the Internet, right?
Doug Bliss, 57 and a retiree living in St. Petersburg, FL, first started to get harassed on Wednesday night. He received a call about the case, asking him about the trial and the verdict, but he said Bliss had no comment and the caller eventually hung up.
Then, on early Thursday morning, he received a call from an unnamed woman, who turned out to be calling from the ABC show, “Good Morning America.” Bliss said, “She started asking me about the Casey Anthony trial. “I immediately said, ‘What is going on? I don’t understand why you people are calling me.'”
The caller said it was all over Twitter and Facebook that he was Casey Anthony trial Juror No. 2. Doug Bliss’ wife Karen did some Internet surfing, and found not on Twitter and Facebook posts, but even images of her husband. Some of them were taken while he was playing guitar at a benefit at a St. Petersburg bar.
What’s more, the fact that GMA was able to track Bliss down so easily was possibly helped by one of the comments at TheDirty.com’s story, which pretty much revealed Bliss’ location. “Look at him… tries to play guitar around the St. Petersburg / Clearwater Florida area. This piece of sh*t needs his head examined.. “
The story is down, but there are still Tweets around with Bliss’ name in them (e.g., 1, 2). Interestingly, Karen Bliss responded to the first of those Tweets with her own, correcting “@sexxxykarin,” but instead of deleting her first Tweet, @sexxykarin threw in another, which said, “ALSO– posted guy was overheard and RECORDED on someone’s i-phone bragging he was a juror. Actions (his) have consequences….”
These sorts of unfounded accusations are more than just bad. There have been death threats reported against Casey Anthony, the jurors, and the attorneys. How would you like to be in Doug Bliss’ shoes?
