Fiend Hunter is one of the newest Magic: the Gathering cards to be revealed from Wizards of the Coast’s upcoming expert expansion set Innistrad.
Fiend Hunter – 1WW
Creature – Human Cleric (Uncommon)
When Fiend Hunter enters the battlefield, you may exile another target creature.
When Fiend Hunter leaves the battlefield, return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner’s control.
Innistrad‘s Fiend Hunter represents the dramatic evolution of “enters the battlefield” creatures. It all began with Nekrataal, the original “187” creature from Visions. Variants like Bone Shredder, Dakmor Lancer, Shriekmaw, and Dark Hatchling later saw print.
For one less mana than Faceless Butcher from Torment, Fiend Hunter from Innistrad brings a powerful ability to the white color pie. While it is true that white has had Oblivion Ring for quite some time now, we haven’t seen this same text on a white creature before.
One can mitigate it’s “leaves the battlefield” ability by targeting token creatures, or players can also respond to Fiend Hunter’s entering the battlefield by bouncing or destroying Fiend Hunter so that your target remains exiled.
Because Fiend Hunter from Innistrad has a casting cost of three, it makes the perfect addition to any deck running Sun Titan. Fiend Hunter is also a worthy candidate for inclusion alongside Venser, the Sojourner.
Don’t forget to include Tumble Magnet and other cards with “enters the Battlefield” abilities like Sphinx of Uthuun and Spine of Ish Sah. Mimic Vat would also make a fun addition in such a deck.
How will you abuse Fiend Hunter?
Several other Innistrad spoilers include Reaper from the Abyss, Hinterland Harbor, Civilized Scholar, Moonmist, Diregaf Ghoul, Curse of the Bloody Tome, Daybreak Ranger, Ludevic’s Test Subject, and Bloodgift Demon.
Innistrad contains 264 cards, and will be released on September 30, 2011. Innistrad will be followed by Dark Ascension.
Innistrad Prerelease events will occur on September 24-25, 2011, there will be Innistrad Launch Parties on September 30-October 3, 2011, and Innistrad will be released on Magic Online October 17, 2011. The Innistrad Game Day will be on October 29-30, 2011.
